The language of flowers was a way of communication rather developed in the nineteenth century, for which flowers and floral arrangements were used to express feelings that could not be uttered.
The Japanese language of flowers is called Hanakotoba. the nuances of language are now almost entirely forgotten, but Red Roses still imply passionate, romantic love; the pink roses a lesser affection; white roses suggest virtue and chastity again; and yellow roses still stand for friendship or devotion. While these may not be the exact translations of Victorian sentiment, flowers still retain the meaning.
Also commonly known are sunflowers, which can mean either haughtiness or respect.The Daisy means innocence or purity. The iris is a message being sent.
A purple means thoughts, a tulip, and a strand of Ivy fidelity.
The attribution of a symbolic significance to flowers and plants dates back to antiquity and the early middle ages and the Renaissance the flowers often attributed moral significance.
However, it is with the 19th century that interest in the language of flowers takes the maximum development, linked to the communication of feelings, so much so that it spread a publishing specializes in flower print books, elegantly illustrated with engravings and lithographs.
