CASTLES COLORING PAGES The castle is a complex consisting of one or more fortified buildings, typical of the middle ages and the 17th century, built to House a garrison of soldiers, with their Commander and his family. It is usually in a strategic place, high and easily defendable. The modern name derives from the castellum in turn from castrum, military settlement. It was in fact a camp organized by several defence structures. The arrival of the barbarians led by the study of Roman engineers of new fortifications, as Aurelian. However with the fall of the Empire and the subsequent cancellation of the central power began to develop the idea of a fortified building suitable to defend a territory. Many castles in the beginning were only of isolated watchtowers, usually of wood, suitable for securing plots of land and control steps required. Often the castles were surrounded by ditches, which could be filled with water (the famous is the castle of Este in Ferrara Italy, fed by water from the Po) or simple ditches. The ditch prevented the enemy from attacking the towers from below trying to make them collapse and allowed them to keep it at a distance from being struck with arrows. The moat could be overcome through fixed bridges in masonry or wooden drawbridges, which were raised in case of attack by preventing the infantry to hit directly the inputs and even overtake them.
